In 2011, we conducted our first Winter Storm events in order to highlight uniquely Eritrean-Californian art, culture, and above all, creativity...
The idea behind these events was not only to promote an Eritrean-American consciousness by reclaiming elements of our history in these events, but also to begin the discussion about how we can create spaces that are conducive for the new generation of Eritrean-Americans. In continuation of this tradition, we will be conducting our sixth Winter Storm event in Oakland from February 17th-19th, 2017.
COOL, WTH IS THE THEME THIS YEAR?
For our sixth Winter Storm, we are continuing our tradition of a thematic focus to highlight emerging issues in our young community. The theme for Winter Storm this year is "virtual reality." Although seemingly abstract, our theme will highlight the conversation we as Eritreans have between our imagination and what we see in front of us. Virtual reality does not necessarily have to be fiction. What we imagine may be closer than we think. We believe that it is only through these continuous conversations (coupled with hard work and action of course) are we really able to find innovative solutions for the challenges we face. Although uncomfortable at times, our history has taught us that this iteration and solution-oriented thinking guides us to victory as a nation. This year, we challenge you, to challenge yourself, and think about how you can make our Eritrean ecosystem a better place. Bring your imagination to life and improve the lives of others!
